George Nolte wrote on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 (PDT):I will never forget the day my dad brought home a brand new John Deere G I was an Iowa farm boy of 6 years old and can still remember the smell of the paint and looking down the hood with those massive stacks. I now own a fully restored better than new 1951 G. Just sitting on it takes me back 64 years. It is a blast to take to shows and parades and have people give it the thumbs up and comment how good it looks and sounds. The sound of that mighty 413 cannot be duplicated Love the G

The shipment was delayed because of wartime shortages of steel; the dealer called the depot in Louisville says that if they never shipped him another tractor he wanted this one and one other. By the time John Deere shipped it to Columbia, TN the government has shut down of equipment sales so that they had to go thru. the rationing board AAA board, I think . Everybody nearly wanted that big tractor, but the dealer, Mr. Henry Porter, stood and said that, This tractor was ordered for this man and this other tractor was ordered for this other man; I think that they each ought to get them. Mr. Porter took good care of my family during the war as it related to equipment.

don hugo wrote on Monday, June 16, 2008 (PDT):just picked up a 46 G in a trade. needs a little tlc but everything is there, runs quite well but needs some carb adj. love the sound of it, i grew up on a farm in northeast nebraska. we had a 36 B and a 46 A. our neighbor had a 51 G. i just loved the sound of that tractor plowing and have always wanted one. like Green Mister, took me also about 50 years to get one. hope to have it looking like the one in the picture in about a year.

Larry Steed wrote on Wednesday, April 05, 2006 (PDT):As founder and president of the newly formed Bluebonnet Antique Tractor Club (BR171 of EDGETA) in Pearland, TX, I have been collecting JD's going on two years now and once I got up close and personal w/a "G", I knew I had to have one. Fortunately I had dealings with Fred Rademacker (a regular seller on the YT site) of Green Valley, IL and he had one of the most beautiful restored "G's" around and offered to sell it to me. Without any hesitation whatsoever, I accepted his offer and brought this tractor to TX, and must say that the "G" (in my opinion) is probably THE finest row crop tractor of it's era that JD ever built. Once you own a "G", you'd probably get rid of it for ONLY one reason; to buy a nicer and/or better "G"!

Bill wrote on Monday, November 01, 2004 (PST):I have a 46 GM that I still use 150-200hrs a year. Just plowed a couple of acres with it. Its "fixed up" and painted. Wouldnt call it restored though. I have an old farmhand 6011 loader that I put on it to plow snow in the winter. I always intend to put it in the shop and totally restore it but I can imagine going without running it for the year or so it would take. Ive even started buying other tractors thinking that would give the ole G the break it needs to get a new lease on life. What a fine piece of machinery the G is.

My Dad had a G that unfortunately we had to part with when our family was forced to auction off the family farm two years ago. And man what a powerhouse that old girl was? A neighbor friend of my Dad's before he passed away, came to lend a hand while preparing for this auction, and I'll never forget the thrill we all shared on the day when he'd finally managed to get the old popper running again. That G could climb hill's from a standing start in sixth gear, as this gentelman demonstrated to us that day. And it sure would have done Dad's heart proud to have been with us to experiance what we did when his old G fired up and moved under it's own power once more. Sleep well Dad and remember we love you and miss you so much each and every day.

I believe it was a 48 or 49 model, narrow front. One summer I particularly remember, we gassed up during haying and took a quick lunch break. During lunch the old G burst into flames. By the time the volunteer fire department got there it was pretty well going/gone. Got shipped to Schwandt's in Shiocton for overhaul and paint, came back like a new one. My uncle kept it until mid 7o's when he traded up for a JD 70D - better fuel economy. That baby had lots of power, I remember plowing in blue clay and gumbo in third gear all day, lots of power but gulped the gas!

This G was mostly used on our farm to cultivate our sugar cane crop. Sometime i starts it up just to hear it pop because thier is no other sweeter then that.

This is the first G propane I've ever seen, And all I pull is G's 1 is a 1938 G JD unstyled and the other 1939 G JD styled I pull with my dad and 9 times out of 10 we end up pulling against each other the last two years he's been pulling olivers I've been coming home with 1st place.

He took an old leaf spring and placed it in the split in the fly wheel at the crank shaft turned on the switch and with one heave started it, he was a very big man. Then as it was running he said this is not recommended as the spring went through the roof once before.

I drove a 1952 'G' back in the late 50's and in the 1st half of the 60's. I also drove a Farmall 'M' during this same era. I preferred the 'G' over the 'M' for handling and driver comfort. The 'G' with "rol-o-matic" was a lot easier to handle over rough terran. Also, nothing could come close to the comfort of the John Deere bench seat.

When the serviceman drove into the yard , they were still rying to start the tractor by towing it all of a sudden there was an explosion and the flywheel hit the ground , the gas had gone into the crankcase and dried off the pistons so that they could not move. the tractor was beyond saving. after 50 JD added a oil pressure line to a valve in the fuel bowel so that when the engine wasn't running the valve shut the fuel off and the gas couldn't get down into the crankcas , good move. I always teach my grandsons how to stop the tractor first they will always find a way to get it going. Any one else had any suprises with two cyl? I had a hand start that when it flooded , we would get out the long barbacue matches, and clean out the pistons and then put the plugs back in and off she would go.

I the time my son was sixteen years old and I was afraid he would get the Harley out and have an accident,so to satisfy myself I purchased a 1948 John Deere "G" but one wasn't enough today my son and I have two unstyled "G"'s and three styled "G"s one which is a puller which is highly modified and a great puller. All the "G"s make some fine two cylinder music,you know no two "G"'s sound alike. Every old "G" I come across I want to drag it home and restore it,only one of my "G"'s isn't restored.

He finally sold it in an auction because he could'nt haul gas to it fast enough. I sure wish I had that tractor now! It's funny how we would do anything to bring back a part of our past.

There was an midwest trader for one. At the time I thought it was a misprint and could never contact the owner. Too bad I didn't try harder at the time. Who made the Propane conversion? Propane wasn't as popular here in west central Illinois as it was out west so not too many guys went to the trouble to convert.

Dan Dooley wrote on Thursday, June 01, 2000 (PDT):I agree the G had very few real faults. One of them was not power. However there was was one major design fault it had. The gas tank had too small of a filler hole. You couldn't pour gas in it as fast as the G could burn it.

A neighbor had one, not sure of the year but just before 1950 or so in there. The one thing I remember about it was one time in the fall this guy pulled a one row chopper for corn silage. I was pulling a wagon along side with a '39 B, 4 speed and I was going up a hill and I had to shift down, so I motioned to him that I had to shift,so all he did waqs pull the throttle back and then he pushed ahead full open, never stopping chopping and I caught up with him and that old G never missed a pop, kept right on chopping and you could count the revolutions on the flywheel and the front end was jumping but it picked up speed again annd never plugged anything. I think it was saying, never say die.

Gayle Zonnefeld wrote on Tuesday, May 02, 2000 (PDT):I was raised on a farm in Iowa and the old G was the work horse. We did everything with it and plowed snow in the winter. It out worked just about every tractor we came into contact. I even entered it in an early tractor pull. Just drove it in from the field and hooked up. We won first place and beat 300, 560 and MTA farmalls. Dad was real proud. Now I live in the city and have to be the only one who has a restored G in the back yard. Some mornings I just have to crank her over and hear that sound. Kinda like a Harley owner.
Brian Rothenberger wrote on Sunday, April 23, 2000 (PDT):My neigbor has a 1946 "G". He bought it new in 46. It was used for many years as the main diary farm tractor until it was replaced by a 70. In it's later life it has been used for plowing snow (It takes a lot of arm strenght to steer with a bucket load of snow) and a wood tractor. Last year he put new pistons and rings in it, the first engine overhaul. Like the tractor my neighbor is old and tough. He is 91 and still drives "old john".

My father and I have three JD tractors a B, A, and a 620, but both of us are really big G fans and hope to have one some day.
