When I actually put it in gear and let the clutch out it just boggs down and will not move. Dan Peek wrote on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 (PDT):I grew up in western Colo. on a ranch on Bone Mesa, Delta. We had two Ms, one a 47 and the other a 51 or 52. Also had an LA Case, VA Case and a 49 0r 50 Ferguson. Later, we bought an MTA 400. We put up 1250 to 1400 tons of alfalfa and grass hay every year as well as 30 acres of corn silage, 20 acres of oats also. In our spare time, we did custom haying with swathers and a 55T International Baler behind one the Ms. That probably accounted for another 3 to 5 thousand tons of additionally although we did not pick up and haul their hay. We all have hundreds of hours on those Ms and they never failed to start and run whether it was -25 or plus 99 degrees. We pulled plows, discs, harrows, balers-ran hay grinders, cornchoppers, you nameit.

Craig MN wrote on Sunday, June 03, 2007 (PDT):Johnny red, I have 2 Ms, 42,46. 46 has been converted to live hydraulics at the magneto drive. They used the filler hole in the orig. tank as a return port, I have some seepage but it works great. I have also seen people add a tank near the battery, you can not have belt pulley drive on though. If you do this you can also use the belly pump to power something if need be. My 46 has a 3pt conversion and a trip bucket, I have added some ball valves so I can direct hyd. pressure forward or aft as needed, if my belly pump was still operation I would be able to use it for my 3 pt.

Pistons can be moved at least 1mm sideways inside sleeves, so it will need a new engine kit. Transmission and diff. look good. Lots of rust. The rest of the tractor is complete. Needs four new tyres. Can anyone give me an idea of what it will cost to restore my M to original condition? I guess prices will differ between S.A. and the U.S. but just for an indication.Is it possible to put a double set of wheels on the side shafts? They look long enough to me and I think it would look real nice! Does anyone have pictures of a Farmall with double rear wheels? Lekker boer! Nico

Don wrote on Sunday, June 25, 2006 (PDT):I spent a lot of my summertimes during High School on a farm that had a Farmall M. The days were spent(the easy days) doing just about anything imaginable with it. There was a two-row cultivator for corn, mower for haying, three-bottom plow for spring and fall plowing. These were the attachments. We used it to pull a Case hay baler, a Case combine. Some jobs were not well suited for the M. For instance, for rotary hoeing corn, it was not fast enough in 4th gear, not quite enough power for 5th gear. Same was true for dragging or harrowing. In about 1940, the International dealer installed an extra transmission that doubled the number of speeds. After this, it was practicle to drag or rotary hoe. Some of the slight inconveniences involved the power takeoff. The transmission was designed so that if using the power takeoff, for instance, combining grain, the combine had to come to a complete stop in order to get the tractor in gear again.

Im guesing your M is worth between $3500 and $5000 you might get a little more for it because it has a wide front end but its not worthmore than $6000

Not long after he had finally found and restored the last one in the collection, he was found to have cancer and died. You could still smell the new paint. Well,after a bit, our daughter and I decided to have an auction and sell the M's and all the rest of Dale's restored tractors, nearly 60 of them. The auction was June 6th, 1998 and it went well. But, I did a dumb thing and bought the M collection back as my daughter was upset about their loss. She and her husband were going to tend to their upkeep, but that didn't work out after a few years. Now, the M collection is on their way to a three day sale in Larned, KS,in October. So,now, will all you Farmall M and other tractor lovers, wish me luck. ;-) I won't buy them back this time. ;-)

IT RUNS GREAT,THE METAL IS IN GOOD TO FAIR CONDITION EXCEPT WHERE THE HOOD WAS CUT OUT FOR A 12 VOLT GM ALTERNATOR, RUST IS LIGHT AND THE PAINT IS POOR (AGED) BUT STILL VERY RED. THE FRONT TIRE IS SHOT, REARS ARE GOOD BUT AGED. MOST EVERTHIG WORKS ON IT AND THE HYDRAULIC PUMP AND CARB HAS JUST BEEN OVERHAULED. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Ted Turnbull wrote on Wednesday, February 09, 2005 (PST):My grandfather and uncle farmed a 500 acre (300 under plow) with a farmall M which was purchased after the massey harris 81 which was thier first tractor after horses. I spent many hours on that tractor pulling a plow, a bull disc, a hay morer, and various other implements. I was to young to be let loose with the bayler,(spent my time on the wagon) or the combine. It was a great tractor but I would not want to have one on a hilly farm. I nearly tipped it over on a side hill pulling the bull disc. I was turning uphill and hit the left brake which caused the wheel to come up very quickly. Taught me a valuable lesson. It did a lot of work on that farm. My uncle would put new sleeves in nearly every winter while it was not needed. We had another 2 plow MH for intermediate work. Can't remember the model #. Farming taught me a lot of lessons that I carried with me the rest of my life. Our sociaty would be in a lot better shape if we were still had an agrarian lifestyle. Just like everything else the income kept going down while the expenses kept going up and most farmers were not college educated and didn't do well with the new ways of making money such as the stock market ect. They did very well at growing our food, so well it kept pushing prices downward which only hurt them in the end. While that is my story. Hope you enjoy it Ted

Larry Decker wrote on Friday, May 24, 2002 (PDT):I may have my years mixed up but the story here goes that my grandfather bought a brand new M in the fall of '36, 1937 being the first year of production supposedly, because he was involved with his stepson in the implement business. It came with a mounted two row cornpicker (2m?) and in those days the wagons were on steel wheels and very long. Anyway, dad told the story about grampa heading up the road on the maiden voyage to the corn field and when he put it into fifth gear it just died. Dad said he was put out with that tractor from then on, but we always had at least one M here on the farm untill a couple years ago when I sold the one I had. I may have to find another one though.

Also it will do well over 35 mph down the road. its all stock. Pistons are not over sized trans is stock gearing.Its not turned up. I guess its not to bad for a tractor that was found in the woods

When we bought it it was locked up tight, pretty much, if it was supposed to move... it didnt. WE have had it since mid march, and it is now totally dissassembled, even sleeves are pulled out of the cylinders. The only thing out together in the differential, we put it back together last week. WE are currently sandblasting and reassembling for painting. Just thought I might throw all this out. If your interested reply and ill try to answer questions and keep updated.

Also to N/a - with respect to a narrow front end, once you have tried to drive a M with a wide front end without power steering compared to a trike setup, you will see why the trike was popular for field work. For haying, which is what I use my M's for, the trike setup is useless as you are always trampling the swaths. Am looking for another wide front end myself and don't have any leads other than to buy an entire tractor. That doesn't work too well for me as I always end up fixing up the parts tractor and still needing the wide front end for the other one.

As far as I know IHC used the W6 and W4 series for their orchard model tractors, the Farmalls, being row-crop tractors, were a bunch higher and not that suitable for orchard work. I bet you could find a set of orchard fenders for a W6 and modify them for a M, though, if that is what you're up to.

Blake Long wrote on Thursday, October 04, 2001 (PDT):Hi, Doug. My Father still owns two Farmall Super M tractors, and they both still run. He isn't farming anymore, but I'm sure he will keep them both for the rest of his life. I don't know what kind of shape your M is in, but I think these tractors have a very tough engine. My Grandfater bought both the Super M's of my Dad's in 1953, new. One only my Grandfather drove until he died in 1975, and that tractor has never had the head off it, and the other one was used by the hired men, all the time. Its been overhauled at least once. When I was in High School, I took the more used one to school for a shop project and learned a lot about it. Like most people never change the transmission/axle gear oil. I would highly reccomend it. I think it holds 13 gallons to the check plug. Anyway, due to clutch problems one time, and a distributor problem once, I know the engine has been siezed at least twice and loosened up, and would you belive it runs fine afterwards. Try checking the "wishbone" on your front end, it could be worn out of adjustment and you may need to shim the front axle pin where it swivels. Ours didn't always get the attention they needed on the farm at that time, so Dad said to drive slower on ours. Well, I hope you enjoy your M. They are a solid tractor. I changed ours over to 12V in the 80s and its easy to do, just change your coil is all I did, and add a GM alternator and 12v battery. Then you can run 12v lights if you want to. Well, take care of the old M.

I have pressure washed it 5 or 6 times and I continue to get more rust until it eventually clogs up between my gas tank and my sediment bowl. Does anyone know where I could buy a new reproduction? I use a 1941 M to plow a 70 acre field every year using a three bottom break away plow with 16 inch mullboards. This tractor is still original, has never been overhauled and still starts without choking it even in cold weather! Tom Saathoff wrote on Sunday, October 22, 2000 (PDT):Jim, I just happened to see your letter and was surprised that no one has responded yet. The fix is pretty simple, assuming "good luck" that the water pump pulley isn't froze. The pulley is in two seperate sections that screw and unscrew to tighten or loosen the belt. At the front of the pulley there is a set screw that needs to be loosend then you can take a rod and hammer and tap on the lugs on the pulley face to move it. More than likely the damn thing (all of mine) haven't been adjusted for a long time and are froze. Use a liberal amount of good penetrant and tap a little, resoak, repeat as much as needed. I have had to pull the radiator and fan to get room to work on this. Desperate measures. Hope this helps you. It would be a good idea to get an owners manual for the M. They are still availible from Case IH or other sources. Tom

I live in Langley, British Columbia and would like to hear from someone close enough that has one for sale. Growing up on the farm in Southern Ontario just outside of London the major field work was done with the "M" It was an excellent tractor for our size of farm (200 acres) and along with the Little "A" it worked hard in the heavy clay soil of the region. We have raised our family and now it's time for a couple of new toy's. I wanted a new convertible and decided that both the A and M would give me all the sunshine I need but at a much safer speed. I recall the M having a very high road gear and can still feel the warm Southern Ontario wind blowing across the hood. Please let me know if you have one for sale or know of an M wanting a good home. Then I drove an 1929 Farmal. Later a F-20; then an "H", but somewhere in there I drove my Grandfather's JD "B"--I drove a lot of JD's, but was always in love with the IHC line. Even today I feel Case-IH are the best line. Thank you for being able to view bygone eras.

I have a 450 that I use for brush cutting, lifting, snow removal, etc. I love it. I want to find a deal on an M, (and will, sooner or later) to rebuild and use in antique pulls. (my 450 was built in 57 which excludes me from many organized pulling meets)

One lever is for the hydraulics, but the other lever remains a mystery. Both levers are on the right side of the tractor when sitting in the seat and both can be controlled while sitting there also.

There are two control levers, both controlled from the operators position and both on the right side of the tractor as you're sitting in the seat. One lever is located approximately around the clutch area and the other is about six inches further back. When the rear lever is engaged, it feels like gears meshing but, the front lever, feels like nothing is happening. I hope there is someone that can tell me what these two control levers do.

John Chovanes wrote on Friday, June 02, 2000 (PDT): To Rev Samuel Bryant - To free the M from high gear you may be able free by removing the shifter. First drive the retaining pin from the bottom of the shifter housing. Next lift the stick out of the transmission. Take a flash light and look down into the shifter hole. You will see 3 rails. The rail on the right side is your 4 & 5 gaer slider. Place a long screw driver into the slot on this rail and pry the rail back, until it is in alignment with the other two rails. As the bottom of the shifters wear out, they are no longer long enough to seat in the rail grooves and they will slip out of teh rail leaving the tractor stuck in the last gear that it was in. I hope this is all that it takes, but if that doesn't do it you will have to remove the tranny top plate and physically free the rail from the stuck position.

Dave Lansing wrote on Friday, March 17, 2000 (PST):Oops! I got my Farmalls mixed up in my message from 3/15/00. Just found the auction list from my grandpa's farm. The H had a horn loader and a snow blade on it, not the M. The M was the one with the wide front that they used regularly. Everything was sold at auction in Portage, WI in March of 1984. Has anyone had experience tracking down where things ended up from an old auction. I would imagine it takes quite a bit of digging and determination, but I would love to find one of those Farmalls and make it mine. I get butterflies just thinking about it. Sounds like I could be setting myself up for disappointment, but oh well!
Dave Lansing wrote on Wednesday, March 15, 2000 (PST):Is this crazy? My grandfather had a Farmall M and a Farmall H on his farm until everything was sold at auction after he died in 1981. I was around ten years old at the time and always loved the farm. They didn't use the M in the later years - it ran fine though. It had a bucket on the front (which may have been a "trip bucket" from what I've read here) that was run by cables and pulleys. The H they used regularly, it had a wide front end. I don't know anything about fixing tractors but am willing to try. This idea just hit me in the last week looking at tin signs, etc. for sale on ebay.com. What would you experts recommend to get started?

My question is how many stage I supers were made? and What is super about it compared to a non super. It does not have the live hydraulic or PTO. Has anyone ever seen a brake pedal broken off? He used the Farmall to do custom hay baling all around our county, and also used to pull a combine, which he also used on other farms. It still remains one of my favorite antiques, although the tractor was traded for an 861 Powermaster in the early 60's, I can still the sound of that engine as if it were yesterday. My father died 2 years ago at the age of 92, still farming and still bragging about that old "M'.

Mike Druschel wrote on Friday, November 19, 1999 (PST):I have a farmall M (1946) that we still use everyday on my dairy farm in pennsylvania We use it everyday to haul manure and rake hay in the summer. For being 53 years old the old girl still runs very well it starts everymorning and stops every night. when my grandpap first bought it, it had steel wheels on it but after about 20 years of that they burnt the wheels off and put rubber ones on it. We still use it to run our silo blower with it's pulley. I will tell you one thing that they are one of the worst things to run over plowed ground. You almost break your wrist try to keep the wheel from spinning out of conntroll. It may be old but it is in very good condition the sheet metal is still stright and there is no rust. i want to do a complete restoration on and put the steel wheels back on it. I want to do this so I can display and pull it at my tractor clubs show.

I love it a ton. when we restored it everything was right out in the open and didn't have to take every part off to get to another that is how simple they are.

It has been modified in its past life with mud guards, additional pto and hydraulics. It is now being used in its orignal condition and colours. I believe it is a 1952 model but no 100% sure. I am interested in finding out about the British buit series of M and Super M tractors. The U.S. has an excellent documented history on the tractors, but what is existing in the U.K.? Anyone have any information on UK sources of data on these tractors and especially their UK history. Are there any internet sites as good as this one? regards

Modified the govenor to achieve more RPM's, have redone the head by milling, flowing, and 3-angle valve grind. It is producing 10.5/1 compression. I have widened the rims myself and now have 16.9/38's and enjoy outpulling John Deere tractors in its horsepower range. We have an antique tractor pull in the South Texas area. Anyone can do this type of modifying and have a great time! Lee Benham
