The MD is the diesel version of the Super M. This 3-plow tractor was one of the most popular and succesfull of all other tractors in it's class. It had 32 percent more power than the regular (non-super) MD. |

Sam wrote on Sunday, January 22, 2012 (PST):My first tractor was a Super MD. The dealer unloaded it and left the operators manual on the kitchen table. Dad didnt know a thing about it, so I sat down and read the manual for a bit, the went out to try it. I will never forget pushing the lever to the gas side, starting it up, and letting it run a bit. When I pulled the lever back and heard the unmistakable crack of that Diesel take off, I was in love! I loved that tractor, it did a good job on a 4 row front mount #461 cultivator, or a 4 14s 370 plow. I used it for almost everything I had to do. We had a M5 Moline gas that was a slug compared to my Farmall. I could outwork the Moline and use less fuel, and had that distinct crack of the diesel to listen to. And smoke! The governer would kick in and the stack poured out thick black smoke. Made the neighbor kids jealous. I had a DIESEL!

It was used when he bought it. We used to refer to her as The Big Tractor ! She was strong!! We would pull 4 - 14 plows with it. I have broke many of an acre with it. After I bought an IH 674 in 80, my mother sold it in the early - mid 80 s. Several years later, the fellow that bought it traded it for a John Deere at Revels Tractor Co. in Fuquay-Varina, NC. I know this is a real long-shot, but would anyone out there maybe have bought a Super MD from Revels in the later 80 s or around 90 Contact me and give a description. I would love to see it! This may be in Wake, Johnston, Harnett Co s. or somewhere close by.

Before when I would switch it over it would make a click noise switch fine now after switching it takes along time for it to make the noise completly switch over. any ideas on how to fix this

Fred Keith wrote on Monday, November 10, 2003 (PST):My dad had a couple of MD's when I was growing up on the farm. They were nice running tractors and I prefer to run them over the ones. Started excellent in warm weather. In cold weather it was best keep them heated or not use them. I don't remember starting good below 50 degrees. Cold weather use tend to give them a lot more head gasket problems. In cold weather we usally pulled started them to help save starters and batteries. I think most of the hours we put on them was running the sawmill we had on the farm. They seem to run all day on 5 gal. on the mill and take 3 gal. per hour in the field. When my dad had the injection pumps rebuilt, put on a dyno and adjusted, the max hp was that could be acheived was 46. He had them set back to 44 to keep them from being over fueled. The engines were 4" bore and in excellent shape. Standard bore for these tractor was 3 7/8". My bought the first in 1957 used and rebuilt it twice before he sold it at auction in 1995. The second one he bought in 1966 and rebuilt it once and sold it in the auction also. They are both still running and I still see them ocationally. We both still both each own a gasoline model M and a model A.

James R. Lentz wrote on Friday, September 19, 2003 (PDT):I have a 46 MD I think. It was given to me and I am going to be putting it on the internet to sell. The men using it on this ostrich farm did not know how to shut it down properly and always had a hard time staeting it. They didn't know that they must be shut down on gas to burn out the deisel resadue. The last time it was shut down was two years ago and of course the old diesel fuel jelled and has stuck the engine. Some hard work will fix it. I am 70 years old and just do not feel up to it. Do you have a suggestion where or what link I can advertise on. Thanks Jim Lentz jimmythecinch1 at ev1.net

Glenn Berts wrote on Friday, June 08, 2001 (PDT):A year ago I bought an '48 MD for $200. The gas side linkage and other parts were missing. The only way I could start it was to pull it. I now put two 12 volt batteries in series to the starter and give it just a small shot of starter fluid and away it goes. It smokes for two or three minutes until it warms up and runs smooth after that. I charge the batteries occasionally after about 25 or 30 starts. Nothing compares to taking off in road gear and hearing the governor kick in and the pure acceleration. This rig will be attached to my PTO sawmill in the very near future.

I bought a single frount wheel assembly for a IH a day ago it is not like the one in the picture above, it has straight side strutes ,not the fat, wishbone style like above. The wheel is not a bolt-on the-hub, or solid wheel/rim, both of these have the single axle-bolt to mount to the wishbone strurt, Mine has like Isaid before the straight sided struts , the big difference is the wheel/rim porition. This part is large castiron spoke wheel. With 1&1/2 diameter spokes about 2 in. apart . This means the V between each spoke is about 2 in deep . The rim is welded to the wheel porition . Any Information on this type of single frount would be appreciated!!! Thanks, John Alfred Smith

Bill Young wrote on Sunday, November 26, 2000 (PST):I am 13 years old and love to fool with old Farmall tractors , between me and my dad we have 9 Farmall tractors 1 Case tractor 4 of our Farmall M's are pulling tractors. We have one Farmall MD and it took us 3 engines to get it to run, because 2 of the engines had a cracked block, but now it runs like a charm and we plan on painting it this week.

P.Geman wrote on Sunday, September 17, 2000 (PDT):This Super MD was my Grandfathers when he got it new in 1953. He had 50 head of Dairy Cows and used it for doing everything. Plowed & planted 75 acres for years in corn. Also Cut and Baled hay. He had the head crack once and it was replaced by the dealer. You have to let the hot engines cool by idling after a hard work out. 15 minutes was the suggested time. The tractor had set outside for some time and the clutch froze to the pressure plate. So that is when I purchased it from Grandpa. He said after the second overhaul ,it never work like before, he thought the dealer did a poor job. Until a few years ago, I found out that after changing the injection pump with a overhauled one, The tractor has been working great. Today I use it for my handyman's tractor. I put a loader on it and move manure and use it also for plowing[snow & Sod], raking, baling on the old New Holland 77 Hay Baler. Just like Grampa use to do.

I do need to do some work on one of the fuel pumps. The engine is not getting quite enough fuel. Does anyone know how to adjust the pump? I still use them on a reqular bases on my farm. There is nothing to compare to the sound of the governer response when under a varable load.

Darald Marin wrote on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 (PDT):I grew up on a Super MD. The tractor came home in August 1952 and is still on the same farm. My brother owns it now. It was restored about 10 years ago by my dad and I. The SMD was burning oil when new, so the IH service man took the tractor for a drive, when he returned he told my dad that the rings should seat now; only after several years did the dealer tell him that the service man gave it the "bon-ami" treatment, a teaspoon of bon-ami for each cylinder into the intake at high idle. That set of sleeves and pistons did 10000hours. The tractor now has 18000 plus hours and has not done any real work for over twenty years. When it did work, it farmed 640 acres and hayed for 125 cows, all in southern Saskatchewan. I was 10 years old when it was new so I made many of those 18000 hours. I now have a few of the old IH 4 cylinder diesels and enjoy running them. They are an engine unlike any other, the sound when they start on gas and then the smell when they switch to diesel is IH's own.
