Antique Oliver Tractor: Oliver Super 77 Diesel

[Return to the Shed]

This tractor replaced the Oliver 77 and was a 3 or 4-plow tractor. It was available in all of the original Model 77 variations, plus the new adjustable wide-front row crop. The "Hydra-Lectric" three-point hitch was available on all versions of the Super 77.

  • Hey all, my husband and I just bought a 1955 Oliver Super 77 and it is supposed to be a diesel engine but the previous owner replaced it with a gas. We want to get it back to original and wanted to know where to find a diesel engine to replace the gas. We are new to this but after attending a few antique tractor pulls my husband and I fell in love so this is our new project. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It was originally purchased by my father Truman Gingerich of Parnell, Iowa, in the spring of 1957 from Happel s in Iowa City. It then went to Ron Bender in the Wellman/Kalona area, then to Elmer Miller. It was sold at the Mahlon Miller farm sale near Kalona, in 1981, to a Mr. Anderson. Can anyone let me know if this is odd or what? I am not a farmer, but I like this tractor. It also has 3 point hitch, live pto and a bracket bolted to the front for what what would seem to be for a bucket or other implement. I also need a starter, injection pump and lines ,1 connecting rod and an oil pan. e-mail me with what you have. thanks.

It has a 12 volt system installed on it and starts real nice and the engine purrs like a kitten, brand new rear tires, I bought the tractor for $800 and I am just wondering what it is worth, even know I am definently not going to sell it.

It came with the property I bought when I started my Ostrich ranch. Now that I have sold that, I still have the Oliver and intend to keep it my whole life. I love it!

  • I recently bought a 1955 Oliver super 77 diesel. It has been restored except for the sheet metal. It runs great and I plan to complete the restoration. I would like to know what the original colour scheme of this tractor was. I have seen several combinations, but want to do mine original. I also need the original rear wheel rims which were 11-38 I believe. I would also like to replace the hood, cowl and grills. The front side curtains are missing so I would also like to buy them. I am really enjoying my Oliver and plan to buy at least one more. Any help I can get will be appreciated. I want to order the paint as soon as I know which colours to buy.

  • To Chag Gallien If you have not found rims for your 77, call Jim Day of Cannan Tire in Cannan Conn. phone 860-824-7789. Jim got me new rims for my Super 77 at a price that was in line or just a little more than most people wanted for used ones. I also got all new tires from him for my 77. Jim has a Super 88 for the tractor pulls. He is a great person and a pleasure to do business with. Good luck with your 77 Craig E-mail Bot44 at aol.com

The price is right , but I would like to locate a good used block , and or parts motor , before we take the plunge . I have located a couple of gas engines , and my question is ; Do the 77 gas , and diesels use the same engine block ? Some say no , and others say yes . My suspicion is yes . Any help would be much appreciated , Thanks .

  • Good Morning I enjoyed the pictures. I grew up with Olivers we had a 66 88 and a 770 diesel. I bought a 1956 Super 77 diesel from the orignal owner. The tractor was in good shape and runs great. All I had to do was a major cleaning. I replaced the gauges, steering wheel, front tires ( rear tires in the spring). A very helpful hint to remove all the grease and dirt. Use easy off oven cleaner. It takes paint and all. So if you are not planning to paint your tractor DON't USE IT. I'll try to send a before and after picture over the net. thanks for the sight craig
