The first numbered tractors in the John Deere lineup were the "50" and "60" which both came out in 1952. The John Deere 60 was meant to replace the Model A tractor. Production ended in 1956. |

larry lile wrote on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 (PST):dereck i hate to burst your bubble but you are severly misinformed about the strenght of your beloved oliver tractors, while they where a verry serviceable tractor they just will not hold up to the same size john deere for comparrison here i am going to use the data from the Nebraska university test, these where the standard that was used in the years past, and are still being used because it was illegal to sell a tractor in Nebraska that did not meet there advertised hp ratings and which would not submit to the testing. all tractors of the period where tested and they where all supplied by the tractor companies for testing, and i am sure that there where company reps on hand to make sure that their tractors where up to specs during testing, these test are readily available today from various internet sources, so with this in mind let us look at the disel model john deere 730 built from 1958-1961, and the oliver 770 built from 1958-196 , these are both 6000 lb class tractors with six speed tranmissions, and wearing the same size rubber the six cylinder oliver 770 diesel at 216 cubic in, delivered 44.4 hp at the drawbar, pulling a static weight of 4571 lbs in third gear, at a fuel consumption rate of 3.4 gallons per hour, with a last base price of 4345.00 while the two cylinder john deere model 730 diesel at 360 cubic inch, delivered a tested 53.4 hp,at the drawbar pulling a static weight of 5633 lbs in third gear,, at a fuel consumption rate of 3.2 gal per hour, with a last base price of 3700.00 the 720/730 diesels held the hp to fuel consumption record for 26years at the university this translates to the john deere pulling 19% more weight, with 17% more horse power and using 6% less fuel while doing it, that is the primary reason why you still find the old john deeres today and why they outsold all other brands. john deere changed to the new generation tractors in 1961 and they did this only because they had advanced the two cylinder tecnology as far as they thought they could get it to go, but they will always be a classic, while the olivers will always be a also ran like the minnies, both where good tractors, but the john deeres sold so well for a reason!

The reason you see John Deeres doing so good is because they are a 2 cyclinder, with a long stroke so inturn you turn them up a lot because of the long stroke to create power. The long stroke also alows the to hold on at the end when they go put.......... put........ put.......put, but a stock Oliver will still take a stock john deere anyday with their inline 6 cyclinder engine besides the 66 and 660 they had an inline 4 cyclinder motor. So as i was saying you may think John Deeres are soo much better then olivers but stock to stock oliver is number one everytime

The later A had a 321 cu engine and was rated at 950rpm. The 60 had the same basic engine but reduced the cubes to 302.9 and increased the rpms to 1125. In so doing they gained a slight power increase. The model A was very popular and would haul 3-14 plows all day long. I love that old tractor, but the newer 2 banger 620 and 630 s will just flat out-haul it.According to the Nebraska test the 1950 J.D. model A will pull 4394 lbs. The 620 will haul 6122 lbs. The real improvement came with the adoption of the 3 point hitch system. The old 2 bangers were loved by a lot of old timers.

It had a broken hour meter 8000+ hours when we got it and must have over 20,000 hours by now. Its on only it s second engine and starts and runs great! JOHN DEERE didn t put zippers in their engines, but I know some of the competition needed them!

J.L.Leasure wrote on Friday, September 17, 2004 (PDT):My Dad used a J.D.60 for many years with a 227 mounted corn picker.It always ran great.When he quit using it,it sat for nearly fifteen years in the shed neglected until a few months ago when I decided to get it running again.It only took a little tinkering with it to get it to fire right up.It sounded as good as it did years ago.I got it out,removed the picker and took it to show recently.It may not look pretty,but that old two cylinder sure has sweet sound.I REALLY love that tractor.Oh,by the way,it is a 1952 model.

I also wanted to say that The 60 was meant to replace the G they are real close in horse power but the 60 has just a little bit more than the G. He is having trouble finding replacements. Anyone out there have a good set they might sell at a reasonable price? I would like to fix it for him. Allen Newman wrote on Sunday, June 09, 2002 (PDT):i once owned a 60 j.d. with a tricycle frontend. it was not suitable for what i needed a tractor for. i have a lot of uneven ground. there was a danger of turning over. i sold it and got a 8n ford so it would be closer to the ground. it suits my propose. i do miss the john deere. i would ride it down the road just to hear it run. there is nothing like that old popping sound. i like the 8n to. wished i had kept the john deere to go along with the 8n. what i am trying to get across is= don't get down on the other tractors because you own a certain kind. they are all good. it is what you are going to use it for.

Co., that you'll find that the Model 50 replaced the B; the Model 60 replaced the A; and the Model 70 replaced the G!!! The farmers of the 1950's used a lot of these tractors in Bureau County northwest of Princeton, Illinois....there was a very aggressive John Deere dealer in Walnut, Illinois and I remember that era very well/rcw.

I think that JD should start manufacturing 2cyl's again,they would put Harley Davidson out off business.They reprduce old houses, old clothing food what ever why not start making 2 cylinder tractors. there are many people that eat sleep and drink 2 cylinder tractors that never farmed before. Why not star a new fade?I know a guy that wears geen & yellow underwear ,pickup, house and what ever . his wife said that if he buys one more 2 cyl he's out the door. That color could cause a divorce.

Realising that a model 2130 is aproximatly the same weight as a model 60.

I can remember raking hay and we also had a self propelled JD. hay baler that we would pull with this tractor. I will always cherish the memories I have of growing up working with that equipment. I am currently searching for a JD to restore I beleive we must keep this history alive for our future generations. Thanks for your time.

John Wells wrote on Sunday, March 12, 2000 (PST):I have a JD60 and took the roll-a-matic off and replaced it with a wide front end and sure does make a difference in the ride. It has a three point and live power. I have left it outside in the winter when it is 10 degrees below zero and just pull the choke and hit the starter and it started so quick I about jumped off the seat!!! It a great tractor for putting up hay.

It is a 1956 (one of the last ones made) . These are great tractors that don't seem to get the attention that the 20 and 30 series get. Mine has power steering, powertrol and a live PTO which makes it very useful even today!

I had to remove them and put in dummies with a hole crossed drilled in it. I bought an after market 3 point hitch for the 50 from Cross Manufacturing in Mindenmines, Missouri.
