I would really like to locate it, but no one seems to remember who he sold it to. I do know the block was welded back in the 50s but never gave any problems. Please let me know if you might have any idea about its location - I imagine it is still in the general area of NW Ohio.

  • Dennis, The Case 600 was only built for one year. I think I was told 1958 or somewhere within a year either direction. According to a friend that knows the Case line well, he said that the total production was near 1,100 with about 300 of those on LP gas, and the rest diesel. As far as parts, they may be a little hard to find since the production was limited. I'll ask him about your questions and let you know what he says. He has 3 of them himself, one on LP and all running.

  • Yes, I've run one of these as new in 1955,working it 6-7 years. It was a good tractor for our needs, however, I didn't like the huge jump in gear ratio from 2nd to 3rd. 2nd was too slow, and 3rd was too fast. This tractor could've used another gear between. I understand that the 600 did have this improvement. Does anyone know for sure? I could be wrong on this point. I'm convinced that the MM- Model G would've been a better choice for us at the time. Being a teenager then, I had not that choice. I think $$$ cost was a considerable factor. The Case 500 was a less exspensive choice, and the man/operator availability, even though diminishing then, was sufficient to apply the extra time required to operate a smaller machine. Hence, an extra plow rating was not as important as was the initial cost, for us, near Choteau, Mt.

I intend to use it to clear some of my land of Mesqete Trees. For those of you unfamiliar with these trees, theyhave beautiful wood grain when large enough to harvest, wonderful picture frame material and and great for smokeing meat.Problem is -they have very strong two and three inch needles when young and on farm land.Makes tillage w/ a regular wheel tractor nearly impossible.I hope to post a picture of this beast in its present run down condition soon.I would like to locate a power steering unit for it.

In tough ground I ran in 2nd. In 3rd the 80 could;nt keep up. Operator is comfort is another matter, all that banging would drive me nuts. A muffled Case dsl won't deafen you after a long day. Sorry i'm kind of biased!

He told me he had worn out 18 sets of rear tyres and rebuilt the engine twice! The tractor is almost complete but missing the hour meter. Does anyone have a spare hourmeter and bracket?? A friend of mine bought another 500 from the same area ( a small rural community with a population of probably 50 people) but his is running - those comments about the sound of that six cylinder are certainly correct - sweet.

I wondered if I would ever see a real tractor with that great big engine. Now we have three 500s, two 400s,two 401s, and one 801 . All make sweet Case Diesel music . Does anyone have a grille for a 400 ?

  • The 500 Case Diesel I own has been with me since 1977. Purchased it from an IH dealer in the Syracuse Ny area. At the time it had new 34 inch Rear tires. Being unfamiliar with the hand clutch, it took me very little time to get used to it. I looked over some of the stories of other people and the PTO has been a little bothersome but I did replace all the disc & cluthches a couple years ago. The parts came from IH-Case. I happened to have a parts book with mostly good part numbers for the 500D. I use a Hesston Habine, Old PTO New Holland 77 Haybaler, and plow my corn garden with it. The engine purrs steady.

  • The 500 must be the best sounding diesel engine of all time. In this part of Wisconsin that would have been a very large tractor in the mid 50's. The first time I ever saw one was in 1969 ar a Case dealer being rebuilt and the dealer saw that I was impressed with it and started it up for me to hear. I decided right then that someday I would have one and 4 years ago I found a very nice one in Iowa and rescued it from JD land. I love talking Case tractors. Thanks for listening. Don Rudolph

It is a lively tractor for its size(except for its power steering, which is kind of slow) and really digs in and snorts in the rough spots. Our 500 Diesel did a lot of acreage on our Alberta farm without a whimper and is now in the process of restoration. It is 99% complete now and a real jewel to look at and run.
