This tractor first appeared in 1937 and featured a new "Visionlined" design. Visionlined meant "streamlining a tractor with a purpose" which was a concept MM wished to be remembered for.

I have a 50 z but grew up on a U. Dad said it would burn 40 gal a day or night. Sometimes we would plow all night. What a machine! Had a UTU about 4 years ago but was stolen in Adams ,TN. It was very complete. i would like to think it hasn t been crushed. My nephew stole it. If anyone has knowledge of this I would offer 500 and a good bbq sandwich. Th boy will regret he was ever a part of my family. He gets to deal with both his grandfathers and God over this. the 500 stands good for now. I love reading all these comments as they bring back good memories. I need some tires for the Z I have now. 12.4x38 if anyone has for sale.

I grew up on a cotton farm in Green Lake, Texas and Daddy bought a new MM in 1953 or 1954. I spent many years working the tractor but can t remember the model. It had the high steering wheel with the trottle to the right of the steering wheel.. Also the high seat. Single front wheel. He bought it at a dealership in Austwell, Texas. I would love to identify the model and find and restore one. Looking for identification sources. Thanks.

The tractor is a ZB or ZA_Model-Special it was made the last year of Z production in 1955-56 If my memory is correct. It had everything you could want, Power stearing heaver brakes, everything but a 3 point hitch. Minneapolis Moline changed models that next year and introduced the 335 445 which was an all new tractor with an all new Hydralic system with a draft sinceing 3 point hitch, made by Cesna aircraft. Both of the new tractors had a different feel, like driving a Ford tractor. I rember that their was a change of ownership,or management at this time in the Company. My father was a MM dealer from 1938 to 1976. I was 10 when the new models came out I rember the company gave away motor bikes and sewing machines with a new tractor.

I posted a note on Jan 7, 2005 when my dad and I were still rebuilding our 1937 Z. We got it done and running by fall of 2005. Runs great. I lost my dad 80 Years old on July 31 2006. A week before he died we were still working on the tractor making final adjustments. Dad was in a wheel chair and loved that old 1937 MM Z. So do I.

My father farmed north of Corpus Christi, TX growing row crops, mainly cotton and milo. In 1949 or 50 as I recall he bought a new MM, what I remember to be a ZAE. As was stated earlier by several others, the steering shaft was not nearly so inclined as the one in the picture. It was on the left side. The Z had a hand clutch, brake pedals behind the rear axle housing on the left, and a seat that would swing side to side. The muffler was under the hood on the left with the exhaust pipe passing through the hood on that side, projecting vertically about 18". I remember the brakes because I could stand up on either or both of them. When running a four row cultivator, I would swing the seat to the left and stare at the row passing under me all day long for fear I might plow out some cotton. If you snapped the cluth in with a rear tool bar of equipment, the front wheels came off the ground. In the winter, we would "lift the beds" with a five row plow that covered up the winter weeds. The soil actually was a little light on the south end so I could run one gear higher which I think was 4th. A seven year drouth started in 1951 and the ground was extremely hard in August when it was time to plow out cotton stalks. We tightened the sweeps with a 24" Crescent to prevent then from tripping. The Z kept on pulling and would finally break the U bolts that attached the plow beam to the tool bar. The only problem I remember was burned valves which may have been related to excessive load. My dad changed the tires from 11-38's to 12-38's and the speed picked up noticably without any noticable loss of power as I recall for what we did. As I recall, we could plow out about 40 acres of cotton stalks in a day. Bid deal,huh? We thought is was.

My son bought a Z last week from a 86 year old gentelman. The tractor has been used very liitle and always kept in a shed. Little elbow grease and the Z looked like new again. It nice to see a 16-year-old continue with the Z were the older gentelman left off.

I grew up on the farm in North Central Illinois. We had two Minnies, a Z and a UT. I remember driving the Z to pull our Ann Arbor and later our Case balers when I was about 8 years old. Tells you how easy they were to operate. Do any of you remember having to get the Z rolling in 4th, pull the clutch and slip it into 5th for road use? Great tractors, and really great memories.

My dad (78) and myself (53) are rebuilding our old 1937 Z we used on the farm in Oklahoma until 1967. The Z had set in a field until we started the restore 1 year ago. My dad Walt Harris worked for Moline in the OKC warehouse from 1946 until 1962 when they closed the OKC branch. We have the totally rebuilt the engine, drive train, PIO etc. and will be ready to start the tractor as soon has we get the Magneto rebuilt and overhaul the oil pump. Wish us luck, this old tractor means a lot to us. I still remember starting it when I was 10 (which was not easy with a hand crank) and started down the dirt road in front of our farm. My dad caught me and did not get mad, in fact he was proud a skinny boy could start it.

We purchased a Ranch in Bosque County Texas in 1948. There was a MM Tractor, tricycle gear, 30 drawbar horsepower, no electrical. We used this tractor for years to farm 800 acres of oats and some wheat and corn. Can anyone tell me what model it was? We later aquired, about 1052 a 50 drawbar MM, tricycle front, with ligths, starter and ect. Although, we never stopped using the old tractor until we sold the Ranch in about1963. WHAT WERE THE TWO TRACTOR MODELS.

My grandfather had a ZA. Wide front,steering shaft down left side,swinging seat with foot rests behind axle,horziontal brakes,little platform under PTO,belt pulley that spun when tractor moved,hand clutch. It was the first tractor I learned to drive and was used for everything. Silage blower,buzzsaw,rake hay,hayloader,disc,drag you name it. The seat was off it so we could drive thru the barn with the spreader standing up. We drove it all the time standing. Used a Farmall H, an M and a 350 for everthing else. An uncle still has it. Tired but it still runs.

When my parents, Maynard & Eloise Hawley, started dairy farming in Stevensville, PA in 1940 they bought a Minneapolis Moline Z, Tricycle Front end, and it was used on the farm until 1958... I learnt to drive on it when I was 6 yrs old and it was the best tractor for power & torque... We had a neighbor who bought a Farmall Super M that couldn't match the Minnie... It was the best darn tractor on the "Belt" for silo filling & you couldn't stall it out as I know 1st hand that our neighbor was planning on showing up dad's tractor with his new Super M, but, it stalled out & plugged the blower pipe 3 times before he gave up & let dad put the "Z" on the belt... Then the neighor tried his best to load the blower up to the hilt to make it plug, but, the old "Z" just dug down kept putting corn up the silo pipe... It was one fantastic tractor & even through I'm long off the farm I wish I still had that old "Z"... It wasn't anything fancy (Metal seat, Hand Clutch, Individual rear wheel brakes & Metal Push Button Starter) but it got the job done... Walkersville, MD

In 1970, my dad purchased a 1951 Minnie-Mo ZA to plant and cultivate with. This was the first tractor I learned to drive. Once, it broke the cooling fan bracket and let the fan gouge into the radiator,which was repairable, but left a large scar in the radiator. He sold it in 1976 to a neighbor, and it bounced around the neighborhood for a few years before disappearing. Then, last winter, my dad and I were taking a drive about 40 miles from home, when we saw a beautifully restored ZA for sale on a used equipment dealers lot. We stopped for a look. My dad, half jokingly, said,"I wonder if this is my old Minnie. We looked at the radiator, and sure enough, there was the same scar from so long ago. Needless to say ,Old Minnie came back home to us, and sets proudly in our barn, but a little prettier than she used to be.

I have a 1950 ZAU and I LOVE that tractor. Looks good all painted up too. The tractor in the picture is a ZBU. You can tell by the steering column and how it sticks up out of the dash. The ZA's had the steering shaft run down along side of the tractor.

Also have a RT Serial # 401724 EE engine #401414, this one belonged to my great grandfather, and I believe it to be produced in 1939. Any help with it would be appreciated. Well I don't mean to beat a dead horse but this is a "ZB" and I do think they only meant to say that the model "Z" has been in production since 1937. I am the proud owner of a 1953 "ZAU" fully restored by my Dad and I. We spent many very enjoyable hours working on this tractor and the rewards were great. I have recieved many coments on what a neat and beautiful Tractor it is. I live in Missouri and there were not many Minnies here. I have shown this tractor at several shows and won first place at many tractor pulls with it. I hope every Minnie owner gets as much enjoyment out of there tractor as I have. Thanks David Lee

I farmed with a golden MM "U" for many years. I bought that tractor when I was 16 years old and baled a lot of hay with it. I remember so many farming memories while I was seated upon that machine. I agree with Frank and the others, i believe that this is a ZB. i own a MM U and a MM Z and it has a straight steering system and seat behind the rear wheels, the seat on this one is too far up and the steering column stands up too high. also, if anyone has any info on restoring a MM Z and getting it ready to tractor pull in the stock didvision please get in touch with me

I learned today that I be getting my dad's 1941 Z which has been in the weeds for about 10 years. It was purchased new in the Spring of 1941 by the man my dad worked for; I was born Mar 31, 1941. Later, after WW II, my dad was able to buy the tractor used, and it was the only tractor we farmed with until 1957 when he quit. I will need some parts such as engine lift-up side panels and grill. Where do I start? Also, the comments above regarding steering wheel and seat apply to the 1941 model; seat well back, swivels in a rubber mounted support, steering wheel shaft is on the left side going directly into the steering sector housing above the front wheels. Our neighbor had a 1951 Z. He was the MM dealer in Grand Junction, CO. I worked for him all through high school and spent many hours baling hay with the Z and an MM baler. The tractor pictured is a ZB. The Z was a favorite tractor in the valley because it was low enough to use in the orchards and could handle row crops as well.

We just purchased a Minneapolis Moline ZTU, unforturnately the serial number is not legible. We are trying to find out what year it is. We were told it is a 1949. It has a side shift and hand clutch. Also it has large fenders and you sit low between the wheels. It has the new style front grill that is red in color and pointed. On the S/N plate is said 3 5/8 x 4 1/2 R.E.. We would appreciate it if someone out there could give us some information.

I know of a Z row crop with adjustable wide front axle Does someone know how many these were made

My grandfather bought a new ZTU in 1948 and a ZAU in 1953 with the live power clutch to run on an AC 66 combine. We still use them both on our farm in Ravenna Oh to do all the small jobs around the farm like raking hay and pulling wagons around. They are the handiest tractors to back a wagon with due to their turning radius and the ZTU backs good and slow. We also picked up another ZAU about the same age as the other one and hope to get it running soon. We have other MM equipment as well such as; 2 row corn planter, sickle bar mower, a 2 bottom and 3 bottom plow, disc, cultivators and the flat belt & pulleys which we used to use for a stationary corn sheller. We also have a 602 Diesel and a MM loader that we mounted on a 1955 Oliver. We love our old molines and probably wouldn't trade them for a new tractor.

My dad bout a new ZA in 1952. The new JD 50 did not have enough power. We restored it a few years ago. Easy restoration, he took good care of it. He says it looks better now than it was new! Great old tractor with a fast PTO. I went back to green to farm, but still love the old MM's.

My Dad had a 1952 ZA, it was one of the first tractors I ever drove. It is still in the family, doesn't run any more, engine is stuck. We used this tractor for every thing it seems like. I cultivated a lot of acreas with it, as well as mowing and raking hay. One of my older brothers has this one. Myself and another brother have a 1942 ZTS, it doesn't run either, but I hope to have it running by 2002. If any one knows of and engine that would fit either of these we may just be interested in it.

Peter Houghton (England) is correct. I grew up with a late 30's Z. It had the sloped out at the bottom red grill, also totally red wheels. I now have a '51 Z. It is very similar to the one pictured except the steering shaft runs fairly straight with the tractor. Hood and grill design is like the one shown.

The tractor in the photo is definately not 1937. My grandfather bought a Universal Z in 1941. We still have it and it is the same bonnet design as the RT models with the red front grill. The tractor in the photo is much newer than 1937.

Of course, all of you are correct about the later vintage of this Z MM. I have many hard hours riding that seat on a 1949 Z -- but, in its day, this was one of the easiest tractors to mount and dismount. But, you had to watch out for that PTO as my father and brother both learned to their very painful reqrets.

All of you guys are absolutely correct. This is a ZB, made between 1953 and 1955. I had a 55. They had the high seat like the UB. Must have some bad serial number info if you think this is a 1937 it would have a red nose. Wheels are painted wrong. They should be all red, no aluminum trim.

I agree with Dean Frank and Ernie. I have a "Z" and it is from what I can figure out by the serial numbers is about a 1951. the stearing wheel shaft is almost straight to the front. And the seat is right behind the rear diff..

The Z's my dad owned in the fifties, looked similar, but the seat was a swivel located further back, and the steering wheel was a straight line to the front along the left side of the engine compartment. I'd love to purchase a model replica of a Z. Any one have one for sale?

My dad also had a Z, the picture is not the Z we owned on the farm in northeast Iowa. at about age 8, my dad asked me to fill it with oil---I poured about 5 to 7 qts down the air breather. Needless to say it wouldn't start. My rearend did hurt for a while!

Are you sure the MM pictured is a 1937. My dad had a Z and a ZB. I don't know what year the Z was but the ZB was a 1955 our first brand new tractor. The tractor pictured looks more like the ZB because of the higher seat and the angle of the steering wheel. The Z had a seat that put you almost behind the rear wheels and the steering wheel was almst a streight line to the front.
