Jerry wrote on Thursday, August 15, 2013 (PDT):Any injection pump shop should be able to rebuild your pump. Make sure they use the right settings. There is a 7.5mm pump and there is an 8mm pump. if they use the wrong settings it will smoke bad enough to kill all the mosquitoes for miles. both the 56 and the 58 should be the larger 8 mm pump. John, look for a Ford 220 diesel. They are still made today for overseas use.

Is a 4 cyl. diesel with a sims injector pump mounted on right side of engine. Has pressed steel front rims with 7;50 x 16 tires. Rear wheel has 6 holes, is 16.9 x 30 tires, pressed steel. transmission dipstick is just in front of shift lever. While we have the tires off of it we are having the rims sandblasted so we can repaint them, we were also wondering what is the correct color of paint for the rims on this tractor What is the correct color of blue for the tin work The closest year that I have been able to come up with is 1954, but if you have any good idea of how to find out the actual year or where I can find the numbers to figure it out I would appreciate it. The tractor also had a loader on it that we are not going to put it back on for hopes of someday restoring it in the future. We are located in Illinois Thanks for your help.

Frank Fry. wrote on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 (PDT):Having just aquired a 1956 fordson major tractor with original log book, I found this site whilst looking for information on it. The story of this tractor goes as follows. Last week I had to go to an engineering yard just outside of Bristol to collect some thing else whilst there I saw this old tractor tucked away in the corner of their yard. I asked what was happening with it, I was told that the whole site had been sold for housing and everything was being srapped. I said the tractor is being scrapped as well ? They said yes we are waiting for the scrap people to arrive. Anyway I gave them £20.00 for their tea & coffee put it on a trailer and took it home. It needed a starter and 3 light bulbs, and it started up as sweet as anything. There is no rust or damage to it whatsoever it also has a front loading bucket. The starter cost me £120 and the bulbs £1 each, I think I may have done quite well.

I am in the process of renovation and have stopped since it can not be ran until I fix the fuel system. Carl Besola wrote on Thursday, March 30, 2006 (PST):In response to Richards Quest. about decompressor operation. If batt. has enough power, eng. should start without decompress. Dagenham when tuned right will start pretty easy depending on outside temp. If nescessary however, it is best to have an assistant. raise lever to decompress, spin eng. over, and when it begins to fire pull down on lever for full compression and eng should start. Whoever is working the lever should have some common sense so they don't stick they're hand in the fan or something stupid like that. Also in my experience, when eng is tuned right, it will knock and ping and shake and lope up and down on the governor when idling, I've found that if they idle smoothly, they will be hard to start and won't have full power [something to do with timing]. My father at one time had 7 FMD's, 5 with sherman loader and power diggers, one with wagner loader,[no digger]and one as a farm tractor.

I agree, the wheels were orange, I do not recall if they were cast or formed steel, to my knowledge there are not any pictures of our Fordson Major, not that I can get hold of anyway. The Major was close to handling most of the loads our 1950 IH MD did, when the pull got tough, the MD had to take over. There were not many Majors around, there were a lot of AC WD-45s. The WD-45 was a very nice tractor, lots of features. But, was over rated, AC just tried to get too much from it.There were lots of tractor pulls, mostly out in the fields but, some organized at fairs, etc. The Major always out pulled the WD-45 quite a lot. I would like to find a Major about a 1952, also would like to know about what the list price of that tractor was in 1952.

The operator, service, and parts manual is available and I got whatever parts I needed for the engine rebuild new. The only problem I had was locating a decent fuel tank(mine has multiple big dents). 3/31/2002 I bought another fordson major diesel w sherman power digger and wagner loader. I'm going to part this one out even though it still runs. Oil and fuel filters are available through a local autoparts store for a fraction of what a Ford New Holland dealer wanted for them. The radiator cap and hoses were also readily available. The fuel pumps are available new. It was difficult finding a mechanic who had worked on one but I did and had him help me rebuild the engine and set it up. There is a mechanic in England (Brian) who give excellent info on upgrades and troubleshooting. He can be found on the fordson page under yesterdays tractors. I'm located in New Jersey and found parts sources in Pa. If you can't find what you need email me. Maybe I can help.

Here is some info about them (which should be correct); The "old" Fordson Major was produced in years 1945-1951. In -51 they started to make the "new" Major (only few was made in 51). It had ca. 40 hp. In 1958 came Dexta (smaller version of Major) and Power Major (more powerful version of Major, ca. 50 hp). The Super Major (and Super Dexta?) came in 1961. Super M. had orange wheels (like all the other models) but they were changed later (62-63?) into white (or grey) colour. In 1964 (?) they stopped making Fordsons and the new models were; Ford Dexta 2000, Ford Super Dexta 3000, Ford Major 4000 and Ford Super Major 5000. They were blue/grey.

It seems we couldn't get it to shift into low range and when we tore it down we found a shaft with a gear seized on it because lub couldnt flow through it. Inside was stuffed the kind of waxed paper that bearing are wrapped in. Was this some sort of sabotage at the plant? It doesn't seem like the paper could ever have gotten in there on its own. Ive always wondered about this. As we understand it, the second color for the later majors was gray--at least in the US. The change seemed to happen in 1962. It matters to me because I am getting a Super Major delivered this weekend which is a '62. Good luck to guys looking for a ps pump or piston. They are hard to find and expensive to fix.

Max Madsen wrote on Saturday, August 21, 1999 (PDT):in denmark the old major is very popular at the tractorpulls. Often with a retrofitted 6cyl. ford engine from a truck or a clayson-combine. My brother and i has been driven a 4cyl. major with a turbocharger from a small off.roader(picup) and now we have bought another one with a 6cyl. engine, but we cant identifi the engine more that its a ford. We need to know the size, how much oil, the fuel injectors setting and the pump, and valve settings before we can use it and tune it up. Does anybody know where we can find some information. Do you know american trucks fitted with an about 100hp diesel engine from the mid-60ès?? if you have any ideas we will be very glad to hear from you!!!! we also have an IH farmal H and another Gas-driven fordson.

peter wrote on Wednesday, June 09, 1999 (PDT):i agree with sam. even though i don't like tractors i think the wheels should be orange (or at least 3 of them anyway!) and i think you should fit a nitro injector.
