Antique Ford Tractor: Ford 671 Select-O-Speed

[Return to the Shed]

This model of the 601 series tractors had a Select-O-Speed power-shift transmission which provided ten forward speeds and two reverse speeds. Note - Whenever you see a "7" as the second digit in the Ford "Hundred Series" tractors, it indicates that it has a Select-O-Speed transmission.

I was told the level/filler was in front of my right foot when sitting on the tractor, however all I see there is a slotted shaft with a lock nut.. need some some help folks.

  • cable fix on this tractor for select o shift.. I like a few have found this cable hard to find at best. the cable usualy brakes at the junction. well burn off both ends with a torch careful not to burn off cable. fit both ends in a vice and begin to braze with very low heat I mean real low dont rush work brass into 3/8 inch of the cable on both sides of junction. this is one time you add far more then you need. after you have admired your worst braze job get your file a beverage and some working music. I filed both sides and center area down until I was at the steel cable. once you have filed the repair area down to fit the guide tube make sure tube is streight lube and slide the cable back into the tube. put your tractor back together and go to work. for those who say this cant be done your are welcome to check mine out as this is now the strongest part of my shift system. Do avoid any bends at the base end of the guide tube as your repair isnt flexable.

It had bad torque limit clutch and fuel pump outa time. runs great now. Tire info rears are 12 .4 x 24. I got them set to narrow tread width and use the tractor for tilling smaller gardens the low gear is great for this. I especially like the hydralic clutch PTO, no grinding when putting it into gear. • I got a hold of a 1959 881 sos for free!! Guy told me that the trans was bad but everything else works. I got it home did a tune-up on the engine and rebuilt the carb. Engin runs great but like the guy said bad trans, or was it I found the main pressure supply tube to the valve body was broke and the strut to band #1 was in the bottom of the trans. After tig welding the tube back together since they are no longer availble and adjusted the bands I still couldn t get the old beast to move. I could hear all of the servo s working and the three planetary gear sets working as I would shift through the speeds. So I decided to remove the axel coupling access cover and found that the lever on the panel was not in contact with the coupling. So I repaired that and put the tractor back together and was able to drive the tractor out of the garage and around the yard. Thats all I could since I had to put the rest of the tractor back together, but just the trip around the farm was a great ride. Now I have a New Holland tractor as well but having an old vintage tractor for free is awesome!!! I love my 881!!

  • Had a 901 Selecto high profile with the California wide front end full adjust in out for 22 inch or wider rows, had to rebuild the engine. Did a complete rebuild from crank and bearings new on up. Parts for motor still on market for the 134 cube motor. SOS tranny worked fine on this one, the gas tank was rusted and crapped out so we bought a reconditioned tank that had a liner blown into it and it was as good as a new tank. This one was red and grey but had gold paint on base almost like primer. It also had a Golden Jubilee emblem in the front of the hood. I heard that was 1953 the anniversary for Ford tractor 50 years out. Great tractor to mow, rake, bale, bushhog, cultivate, ditch,it worked nice with the almost automatic tranny and watched the neighbors getting gears and jamming clutches in shift combat. Traded it in last year restored for a 1997 6200 JD with cab and modern features, it was time for us to move out of the 1950,era. Ron's Equipment in Ft. Collins Colorado has parts for all Fords and knows the ropes on them. Good shop for R&R or restorations too. I really liked the slide out PTO lever on the right side of console/dash smooth in and out no clutching!!!!!!!!!!

My question is, can I as a beginner repair this transmission. How do I get the cover off without making the problem worse? Any information or help would greatly appreciated. Thank you. • I am currently looking at a ford 871 with SOS transmission, the trandmission has some problems and if I purchase it I would like to convert it over to a standard transmission. What tractor model would have a compatable transmission and what other parts if any would I need in order to convert it over?

  • I picked up a 1958 971 SOS about a year ago to level and pull stumps on the homestead here in Alaska. Nice tractor with a lot more power than a 8N or Jubilee, actualy a little over kill on the power, have snapped several lift arms. I took out several dozen 12"-30" birch/spruce stumps with a sub-soiler and box blade. As far as tranny problems; alot of times it's only the selector handle out of adjustment and not engageing intended "notch" correctly. I have to agree with most of the other comments; SOS's make for great collectibles but if you are really going to work it, play it safe and stick with the gears.

He thinks it is a 660 since that is what is stamped above these numbers but ha was told that it was a '62 but that doesn't jive with the bio on this tractor. another site said it was a 1956 and was just getting a second opinion. Any info would help thanks

  • I have a 57 871 Select-O-Speed. I have never had any problems with it until recently. I was working on a little wetland project near my home. I was using a 3pt bucket to build a little island for ducks to nest(my cats put them out of business last year). Anyway I was doing a lot of backing up and pulling dirt up to form an island. I don't know why but the shifting pattern changed. Displayed park is now 1, r2 - 2, r1 - 3, n - 4, etc. displayed 8 is now nuetral and 9 and 10 are the reverses. If anyone has any idea what went wrong I would appreciate some advise.

  • We know very little about our 871 Ford tractor with original gold paint. We got it from the original owner who said he bought it in 1959 and that each dealer only got one as a promotion for the selectospeed transmission. It has under 1000 hours and is in very good condition. we would like to know more, might think of selling.

Where would I look on the backhoe and the loader for ID so I could try to get the correct manualsvfor these? Thanks for any help.

  • I just bought this old Ford tractor that had been sitting for 1 to 2 years. I've been searching the internet for the last couple of days trying to identify it. It doesn't have serial numbers by the starter where everyone says they should be. A picture on this website look very similar to my tractor and it appears to be a 671. It has the sos xmsn and one rear pto. All the heavy iron is blue but by scratching the blue, it has red underneath. Can anyone suggest ways to confirm it's identity. I want to buy manuals for it.

  • Bill, there is a lot of info on the sos x-mission available. Take your time and look at it in sections not as a whole when repairing. It's no more difficult than a regular automotive automatic. Don't forget, you've got to be a perfectionist to work on any automatic.

  • I have a ford 4000 SOS 1970 Model and the tractor works good except it goes foward when the inching pedal is depressed or in neutral. I have not found out why the pressure all check good. People have told me this is normal for these transmission, I find that hard to believe because if this tractor did this when new Ford would have never sold any. I make it hard to hook up implements. Any information out there or do I have to live with this problem. The tractor shifts through all gears and seems to work fine otherwise.

  • With regard to the Select-o-Speed, I too have found it very nice. I have a 1962 4000 row crop with the SOS, and enjoy the ease of changing speed. With respect to the paint scheme, my Dad had a 601 Workmaster, and I agree it was a red sheetmetal/red engine. All other 601 references are the same that I have seen. As to other colors beneath the original, I have found that on my 4000. It has a early 1962 serial #, and after I recently took mine down to bare metal to restore, I saw red beneath the blue. Given the resemblance and inter-changablity of early 4000 parts with the 901, I suspect that leftover 901 parts were used in the first production runs for the 4000.

  • I recently purchased a 1959 Ford 671 select-O-speed diesel. This tractor had been painted blue and passed off as a 2000. In my investigation, I have concluded that it is a 671. I am still looking for proof of this. When I opened the hood, I find the inside of all body panels were originally red. When the seat was removed, it was red under it. There is one odd thing though. The control arms for the front axle are gold under a coat of red. Also the rear rims (outer rim only) were first painted gold. I have not found the gold anywhere else. Does anyone know if this is correct, or for what model? The serial number seems to have been eaten off by battery acid. I was told that it was on the left side. Any help would be appreciated.
