  • I bought my first John Deere tractor in 1980. Yes, it is a Model H and is a 1941 vintage SN; 25297 . It came home in 3 boxes and when I bought it, I was told that all I had to do was put it together. WRONG! The connecting rods were wrapped around the crank shaft and all of the oil lines had to be replaced because they literally looked like spaghetti. I drove all over East Tennessee hunting parts to put it together. My family laughed at me for sitting in the seat making engine noises. I needed a tractor to haul my fire wood with and this fit the bill for several years into the future. I still use it to haul my granddaughters on rides but no more work for this baby.

I did a ring and valve job on it but didn t allow enough valve stem clearance. It needs another valve job to run.

My neighbor look up the serial # and told me it was a 1938 model, but now I don't know if they made them in that year or not. I think it was made in the late 38's but they didn't come out and sell until 1939. I love my tractor.

How much is it worth restored? I would never sell it - but my wife is afreaid I am wasting my time... Told her it was not about $ - just about those summers I spent on my grandpas farm.

My sister got a Massy Harris Pony(or how ever you spell that) and my brother got a Farmall Cub (Mine is the biggest one of all of them ;-D). I got to drive it once. I hope to again soon. I just got a collectors model of my tractor, like for show. Model "H" are very hard to find, but that one was the first one I saw in the store. cya!

  • My Grandfather had an H, two As, two Bs, two 620s, two 3020s, a 4010 or 4020 (can't remember which), and a 4430. Of course, he didn't have all of these at one time. Unfortunately, he passed away about 5 years ago, but my grandmother still speaks fondly of the old H he had. She never let anyone learn to drive on a tractor on her watch that didn't have a hand clutch. He got his H in 1942 during the war, and had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it. He taught me a lot of lessons about hard work, and one of the things I remember most is that he said 'if it isn't green, it isn't worth a damn'. I live in the city in an apartment now (yeah, it's like being in jail) and I haven't heard a popper in years. I have to admit I get a little jealous when I see all the posts of people restoring old tractors. Some of my favorite memories are of heading to friends houses and taking a couple of Johnny Poppers out across the farms and hitting fishing holes. I can't think of a better way of getting from pond to pond.

We'd just put the cultivators on it & for a guy my size it looked like a monster! As I drove it up the lane to the barn I turned too close to the wooden stand that supported the 55 gallon oil drum that was our gasoline storage tank. It came to the ground. Had a good lot of kindling when I got done! Don't remember Dad's exact words but I knew then and now, he was NOT happy! Strange thing though, I've been driving this same H for over 40 years now and though it is a small tractor, sometimes it just amazes me what it WILL do!

  • I own a restored 1939 H #2305. However this tractor was originaly #1010. The first 104 or so H's were built with cast cranks, they broke, so they called in those first H's and replaced the crank with a steel one. When they did this they restamped the serial number, this is what happened to mine, which makes it the 11th H made.

  • I have a restored 1941 JD H Ser # 26503. It is one of the more fun tractors I have. Gets lots of attention in parades. Weighs only 2200 lbs. Easy to trailer and easy to work on. Recommend them highly.
