[Return to the Shed]

The Pony was built between 1948 and 1957. It had a little Continental 4-cylinder engine rated at 1800 RPM and was capable of 10 HP on the drawbar. It was built only as a standard-tread model and was sold at the time for about $900.00 - additional optiosn were available such as a belt pulley, PTO and a hand-lift for implements.

  • I ve been fortunate enough to care for my friends ranch, over the past year or so as the family deals with the trials of life. My friend, who had to leave our province to secure work, asked me if I could look at their old tractor and perhaps get it running again. The tractor had been parked for nearly thirty years. I agreed, turns out it s a pony, with #40 mower. I tried the engine with the hand crank and it turned freely. I removed the engine cowling and blew out the top of the engine. Removed the plugs, lubricated the cylinders.. Added fuel, one of my tractor batteries, and hotwired the ignition. key was broken off inside the lock she sputtered, fired and ate my battery for breakfast. low charge Charged the battery and returned the following day. She didn t sputter.. didn t fart.. just plain fired right up and purred like a kitten..er.. pony. This prompted me to try the side mower......prompted me to research the side mower.. prompted me to use my brain to figure out that it had been re-connected simply for storage and use.. The tractor is missing some sheet metal sidecovers and battery cover aside from that what an amazing machine.. it drinks gasoline like a survival nut drinks water in the desert. very sparingly I have used all the gears and the pto, today I plan to return to the ranch and re-mount the mower. Lower field is getting really tall and I am in love with the thought of mowing that field. health issues prevented sr. from properly working the ranch Just thought I would add my story so far, to those already here. THANK YOU MH for giving my life yet another amazing experience. post script; I am purchasing this tractor from the family, so that it may remain, on the ranch where it belongs.. back in service, albeit light duty.

Like the Poney and the AC MOdel G My Earthmaster has the Continental 62 N engine in it but the oil bath breather would not fit my Earthmaster. I ll give you a good deal. I also have a AC model G clutch pressure plate. It would not fit my EM either.

  • My grandfather bought a repossessed Pony in the 50 s for 700- 800. He would bring it to our house to plow the gardens and when I was around12 or so I would do the driving about 4 miles between our houses. My Dad eventually ended up with it. This tractor has plowed snow up here in the rugged Maine winters,Hauled many cords of wood, both tree lenght and 4 wood on a trailer wallowing through the mud. Plowed, harrowed and cultivated our family gardens. Oh I almost forgot, when I was around 4,5,or 6 my Dad used her to mow the field hauling an old horse drawn sickle bar mower and horse drawn dump rake. These tractors may be called Pony but they work like a Horse!!

  • I grew up on a farm in North Carolina in the 50 s. My dad bought me a used Massey Harris Pony when I was about 10 yrs old. I used it to pull tobacco trailers, plow the garden and just to play with ... I always would try to find a steep hill to climb finding a steep hill in the flat lands of eastern N.C. is not easy . I drove it a lot on the country roads when trucking tobacco. We had an old Studebaker car on the farm that I played with on the field paths. I took the horns off the car and mounted them above the headlights on the tractor with a horn button attached to the steering column. I always enjoyed the reactions of drivers along the road when I blew the horns as they passed. Just wanted to share some of my pleasant memories from the past when I had a Massey Harris Pony. I also ran a hydraulic wood splitter from it, and a Thomas Watson #1 rock crusher. It worked like a charm. You know what The only problem I had in 7 years was with the distributer getting damp and causing misfiring when the engine was cold Despite having all NEW Distributer cap, rotor, wires and plugs Yea...as you would probably guess, I realy miss that old pony...You know, if I had my time back, I wouldn t have sold it. I found some pictures from the restoration, and the more I look at them, I want to track it down and buy it back, if they re willing sell....Anyway, if anybody reads this and they are thinking about selling their own pony, stop and think first how life will be without it. Cheers!

  • My dad bought a MHPony in 1957 new, in fact traded a team of horses in on it. I can tell you that tractor did a hell of a lot of work and burned almost nothing for gas. It was a great tractor for the garden, haying, and yarding and cutting firewood.A bit too small to tow a bailer, but it would mow and rake hay as fast as any big tractor. My dad still has it and it's still in pretty good shape, except the steering box is worn making steering hard and sloppy.Would like to replace the steering box for him as hes 85 years old and still uses it. Anyone have one?

If you have never overhauled a pony engine, you will find it rather expensive for such a small engine. Pistons are also hard to find. Some of the older massey feguson dealers may have a few carb kits for this tractor, I found one this way. I need an exhaust manifold for M/H pony if anyone out there has one for sale.

Model and year not specified in ad; condition is seller's opinion ;-). Is there an illustrated guide to original Pony attachments?
