  • I bought my neglected 1959 550 diesel in 1979. We repaired everything and have been using it for all our hobby farm utilities. Over the years we have bought a full complement of tools including rototiller, bushog and a 15KW PTO driven generator in 1982 after a 7-day power outage. That is where this tractor really shines. We can run everything we need to and this tractor sips diesel as low as 3/4 gallon per hour. In 1998 we rebuilt the PTO clutch. That is the last time we spent any significant dollars on it. We take care of it and it takes care of us. Its a family friend.

  • In the 1950 s and 1960 s our farm used two Super 55 s and three 550 s and also other great Olivers. . The 550 s in my opinion, were the best small tractor ever b uild by any company. We pulled 3 plows in heavy hill soil and kept a manure loader on one . Also baled hay pulled grain dril and cultipacker in tandrum in forth gear. They were very dependable and tough. We never worked on a 550 engine. Hydraulic problems with the Super 55 , but never any problems with the 550 s. All were gas engines.

  • I have just restored my oliver 550 after 10 years of it sitting. I had many problems with the tractor. I think I have gotten a lot of the small things fixed and it is finally running. It runs great and has lots of power. Parts are hard to fine for the tractor. My suggestion is if you can get your hands on one that is just for parts do it. I am currenlty looking for one. If anyone knows of one let me know. Mine is gas and have yet to see how good it is on gas. It has a loader which works very nice. The loader is an industrial loader and is very heavy. I think it will be a great tractor. Be prepared for your pocket book to get pretty thin if you restore one.

In 30+ years of farming with many tractors, I've always said this little workhorse was and is my favorite. I love the power steering and live pto. Now in my later years with the kids gone and married, I am getting up my courage to restore this little favorite! We still use it to mow and run augers. We don't have the hogs anymore! Suggestions would be appreciated!

Our 550 has the regular red rear rims(non power adjust) and it appears that only early 58's had these as a hold over from the super 55's. It also has the the 144 cube engine which is the same as the super 55's. About 35 HP. It will never be sold since it was my Dad's. We don't use it much but it was fun growing up with it. It also came with Ollie double plows and harrow and also an ollie hay wagon. AGCO would make a fortune if they started making them again. Did I hear Ford is doing a limited run of their old N-series? By the way anyone out there have the red rear rims on their 58? I am trying to determine how many had them. E-mail me please.

  • We bought our Oliver 550 brand new in 1961. At the time we were farming 173 acres with only one 1951 Oliver 88. The 550 was used for just about everything except fitting. The 88 pulled 3-14's as a trailer in 4th gear, and the 550 3-14's as a full mounted plow in 3rd. Our soils are clay loam. When the 550 was new you could steer it with one finger without power steering. Then several years latter we put a loader on it and eventually that abuse messed up the steering. We should have put power steering on it. I still have the tractor and I am considering getting a finish mower for it. I is a darn good little tractor.

By the way the 550 was sold in Canada under the trade name of Oliver 550. The Cochsutt model 550 was also available from Oliver vendor. At that point of time the Oliver 500 model was also available wich was more like a David Brown's cousin than anything else.

New oil pump, and cam shaft plus the usual pistons rods and bearings etc. A complete rebuild. It will cost $1500.00 to do the complete rebuild with all new parts. This means I would have to sell the tractor for $2900.00 to break even. Could someone tell me if I could get this for this tractor since the rest of the tractor is in excellent condition? I bought this tractor about 3 months ago and the governor went bad. I replaced it but it cause the carbuerator to flood and filled my oil with gasoline. As a result I think I spun a rod bearing. It started making a lound noise so I have not used it. Everything worked. Has a stong 3 point lift. Good pto. I hate to sell this one but I needed a tractor bad, so I had to buy another one. This would make some one a great tractor if the engine bearing problem was fixed. I will sell for $1200.00 as is obo. Again this tractor looks Great!!!!!

  • I have only had my 1958 Oliver 550 Gas for a little over a year now. I use it to rake hay, bush hog, finish mow, grade, plow and till. I feel it would be much better for tilling if it had a lower first gear, but other than that it is an excellent all around utility type tractor. It uses so little fuel that I recently sold my single cylinder riding mower and bought a finish mower to use on the 550. The 550's 4cyl 42HP engine uses less than half the gas the 16HP Kohler engine would use to do the same job. When you use the live hydraulics and independant PTO along with all that power, you'll know it is in a different class than the other small utility tractors that you hear and see everyone else trying to use.
