Antique Allis Chalmers Tractor: AC D21

[Allis Chalmers D21 Parts]     [Return to the Shed]

The D21 was the last of the D Series and the first AC farm tractor with over 100 horse power. It also had a completely new look. The increased horsepower created a need for larger implements to be manufactured including 7-bottom plows.

  • D21 Story; We farmed around 1000 acres of dry farm ground in Idaho. We had 2 series II D21 tractors decked out with duals and the Egging Cab with every possible extra at the time. To this day I can still hear the sound of the deep throaty should of the engine and turbo as it whistled down when we shut off the engines at the end of the day. One experience that I will always remember was a time when we were breaking open ground out of the then Soil Bank program that the government had similar to the CRP program today. We burned the grass off of a 360 acre parcel and began opening the ground with 18 foot and a new 21 foot Geoffery chisel plows. It was an exciting time as the ground had layed dorment for close to 10 years. We sunk the chisel plows deep and started the project. I was pulling the new 21 foot plow for the first time which worked the tractor hard but I never had to take it out of 4th gear. Coming up out of a small raveen I heard a bang and hydraulic oil squirting everywhere over the back of the cab. The D21 had pulled the hitch right off of the frame of the 21 ft plow breaking the hydraulic lines. As we were working together, my dad was driving the other D21 and saw the whole thing from behind. He pulled up, got out of his tractor and said to me, Dang, who would of thought that would happen . We both were smiling as we thought of just how powerful these tractors really were. Needless to say the hitch was not only replaced but reinforced. Those years were an exciting chapter in my life. Wonderful memories.

Sheet metal is great shape with exception of grill. Intend to 'play' a little, mow CRP, replace hoses and seals, and eventually restore to orifinal condition. Always wanted one and thought better not pass up opportunity!
