1946 Farmall H - Alternator Installation

This is how I mounted the alternator on my Farmall H. I used a GM alternator from a 1991 Chevy but any GM alternator of this vintage will be small enough to work under the hood of the H. I had to mount the alternator up side down that is from the way it is mounted in the car because of a bump on the side of the alternator hit the hood. A light or resistor connected to the L connection MUST be used to make this alternator work! On some alternators the red, or battery wire must be used also. This wire can go to the battery connection on the back of the alternator. This newer type alternator uses a built in computer chip so DO NOT remove the connection to the battery while the tractor is running or you WILL destroy the computer built into the alternator! Another thing I did is turned a small V pulley out of aluminum stock. You may be able to use a V pulley from an older style GM alternator for your pulley. This alternator will charge at slower RPM's then the older alternators. Mine starts charging as soon as the tractor starts even at slow idle! I liked this alternator so much that I took the old alternators off my Farmall A, B & MD and put this style alternator on them. I get them at a local junk yard for 20 and take them to a shop that rebuilds alternator, starters etc. and have them checked and he tells me which wires I must use to make it charge.
