1950S Can Punch

1950S Can Punch

In the 1950's and early 1960's these were used to punch holes in the bottoms of metal cans before planting plants in them. The red one is the oldest and punches holes for one, two and five gallon cans. The yellow one is the same as the red one but a little newer. The silver one does quart size cans.

They were purchased from Unknown D. Kinsman Nursery, ?375 N. W. 48th St., Miami, Fl.

The impliment leaning against the wall cuts down the sides of the cans. That was done when you sold the plant where the customer could get the plant out of the can. Then if the can was rusted up a lot you had to use rope and tie the can back together where they could get home without the dirt falling off the roots. The metal cans were dipped in tar before punching where they wouldnt rust so fast.

The red one is missing three of the 'teeth' that do the actual punching. Its a work in progress but getting there.

While not a typical farm impliment if you were in the Nursery business these were a must have.
