1943 John Deere B

While having the carb rebuilt, I decided to install a NOS 3-way fuel valve. I drained the larger all-fuel tank. When I looked inside the tank to check the fuel level, there was all this 'stuff' settling near the opening. Got the flashlight to get a brighter look and found pieces of wood in the tank. After the tank was empty, I removed the sediment bowl assembly.Went to the house and told my wife to get whatever she thougt we could use to get the wood out of the tank. After she finished laughing, she came out with a BBQ fork and fry tongs. She tied string on each so they would fall into the tank. What she could not 'fish out' from the top, she pushed out through the bottom with the JD fuel lever.

An old-timer told me this week that his father would check the fuel level with a 'notched' stick. Any other ideas how this much wood got into the tank?
