Here's the DNR trying to cover their butts! If this was anyone one else, it would be big fines and big time environmental cleanup (). I'd like to see proof of their claims of NO mess! Tom The DNR is taking charge of a clean up effort, after its own crew fell through the ice on a Northern Michigan lake. It happened Wednesday on the North end of Little Glen Lake, in Leelanau County. An excavator broke through the ice while crews were working on a dredging project for the DNR. The project was cleaning up a channel about three-hundred and fifty feet from the north shore. Ham Hobson, part of the DNR work crew says he thinks the quality of the ice, not the thickness, was more influential to the accident. The DNR has done this type of work on the ice before, saying it's a common practice, especially in the upper peninsula, And the crew chief says there's no need to worry about fuel or hazardous materials spilling into the lake. Getting the excavator out of the shallow lake is proving to be trickier than the dredging process was supposed to be. Crews are planning on cutting through the ice and dragging that excavator across the lake bottom to the shore. There's no word yet on when that will happen. The driver of the excavator wasn't hurt. He was able to get out of the machine and walk to shore. Submitted by Someone, from MI |
