1950 Caterpillar D2=5U

27-01-2010 Edendale Crank-Up Weekend Southland New-Zealand point of interest here is that D2-5U 9706 is fitted with the seat tank(Back tank in kiwi lingo !)according to my information the entire first production run of D2s(1938)were fitted with seat tanks once in the field users complained that the drawbar could not be seen from the drivers seat so Caterpillar offered the fender tank(side tank in kiwi speak)as an option New-Zealand Caterpillar franchise holder Gough Gough & Hamer Ltd. decided not to bother with options and ordered all D2s with the fender tank form that point on until the fender tank option was withdrawn by Caterpillar in 1954 l've no idea why one lot of D2-5Us(and some D4=7Us)were imported in 1950 with seat tanks my guess is that the order was urgent and they were sent or excepted to make up the numbers Submitted by Alister Anderson , from NZ
